The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917. 　　The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war. 　　The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule. 　　THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period.

A devastating chronicle of Tsarist Russia from the eve of World War I until its brutal demise in the revolutions of February and October 1917, The Fall of the Romanov Dynasty comprises hundreds of films that Esfir Shub unearthed and rescued from damp cellars and other neglected corners of the Soviet Union, including newsreels and home movies taken by the Tsar’s own cameramen. Using the film splice as a cudgel, Shub contrasts the Imperial Family in opulent ballrooms, regal processions, and garden tea parties with the backbreaking toil of the masses, a bitter satire that makes the Revolution seem both historically inevitable and triumphant. One of the great pleasures of this Vertov retrospective is rediscovering the work of certain largely forgotten women filmmakers of the Soviet avant-garde, including Elizaveta Svilova, Vertov’s editor and wife, and Shub, who pioneered “found footage” cinema and was instrumental in the development of dialectical montage, collaborating with Sergei Eisenstein on the shooting scripts of Strike and Potemkin. He has just completed a series of four new films, built around four women from four different areas of Eastern Europe with four different destinies, each finding herself unexpectedly and improbably alive after war’s end: Ruth Elias from Ostravia, Czechoslovakia; Paula Biren from Lodz, Poland; Ada Lichtman from further south in Krakow; and Hannah Marton from Cluj, or Kolozsvár, in Transylvania. “What they have in common,” wrote Lanzmann, “apart from the specific horrors each one of them was subjected to, is their intelligence, an incisive, sharp and carnal intelligence that rejects all pretence and false reasons—in a word—idealism.” What is so remarkable about Lanzmann’s films is the way that they stay within the immediate present tense, where the absolute horror of the shoah is always happening.

Lucy Worsley travels to Russia to tell the extraordinary story of the dynasty that ruled the country for more than three centuries. It’s an epic tale that includes giant figures such as Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, the devastating struggle against Napoleon in 1812, and the shocking murders of Nicholas II and his family in 1918 which brought the dynasty to a brutal end. 　　The Romanovs were the most powerful European monarchs since the Middle Ages, wielding unmatched authority into the 20th century. Lucy will see how they embraced and sponsored the arts on an astonishing scale, commissioning artworks and building spectacular palaces that still dazzle today. 小暮すなみ、ちなみ、こなみ、えなみは四姉妹。母はおらず、父の謙三は札幌へ出張中。すなみの同級生・明日香とリゾート会社を経営する小日向信彦の結婚パーティーの日、すなみはちなみとこなみの同乗する車で会場の豪華客船へ向かった。 　　すなみを送った後、招待状を間違えたことに気付いたこなみは豪華客船に向かい、小日向の知り合いだという樋口彰と出会い、心を惹かれる。一方、車で帰宅しようとしていたちなみは、港署の刑事・沖田淳一の車とぶつかりそうになり、言い争いになる。 　　結婚パーティーを妨害するという予告電話が何度も掛かっていたことから、豪華客船には港署の刑事・野崎が警護のために来ていた。そこへ野崎の部下である沖田が駆け付けるが、彼が謝らなかったことに腹を立てたちなみも付いてきていた。さらに、謙三と会う約束を中止にされたえなみも、豪華客船にやって来た。 　　やがてパーティーが始まるが、明日香がお色直しに行っている最中に火災警報が鳴り響き、沖田は明日香の死体を発見する。彰はちなみを拳銃で脅し、現場から逃走する。凶器のナイフに彰の指紋が付着していたことから、警察は彰を犯人と断定する。 　　廃墟のビルに身を隠した彰はちなみに対し、自分は小日向を殴ってやりたかっただけで、殺人など犯していないと告げる。彼の所持していた拳銃も、ただのオモチャだった。彰は警官に発見されて捕まりそうになるが、ちなみが警官を妨害して彼を助ける。野崎達と共に現場に来ていたこなみは、彰と共に車に乗って逃走する。 　　すなみは小日向に会い、明日香が小日向と結婚する前、バー“プライム”でピアノを弾いている西村英二と付き合っていたことを知る。一方、こなみは彰から、小日向が三崎麗子という恋人を捨てて明日香と結婚したことを聞かされる。西村と会ったすなみは、小日向が明日香の父親の持つ財産が目当てで結婚したと聞かされる…。
